Designed by renowned naval architect Robert Clark, Sir Thomas Sopwith was originally constructed in Falmouth, UK, for the Ocean Youth Club. Launched in 1974, it was bequeathed to the Trust by the famous British aviator and America’s Cup yachtsman, Sir Thomas Sopwith. Initially serving the Ocean Youth Club’s sailing program, the vessel spent fourteen years navigating the Atlantic, Caribbean, and the
UK. In 1987, she became the founding vessel of the Ocean Youth Club of Australia and participated in the Bicentenary celebrations in 1988.
Over the next 15 years, Sir Thomas Sopwith sailed tens of thousands of miles along the Australian coastline as the OYC South vessel. In a weather-beaten state, the yacht was discovered on a mooring in Pittwater, requiring a significant refit. The previous owners undertook an extensive rebuild and restoration involving a specialised team of maritime contractors to deliver a high quality
vessel with all the systems expected of a modern, luxury cruising yacht.
Sir Thomas Sopwith was transformed into a classically styled, luxurious yacht with true ocean-going pedigree and modern cruising amenities, meeting and exceeding commercial survey standards. From its origins as a safe and seaworthy training vessel, Sir Thomas Sopwith now stands as a testament to craftsmanship and maritime excellence, she holds a special place in the history of yacht design and is a unique and unforgettable way to experience the tranquil beauty of sailing in Sydney Harbour, Pittwater, the Whitsundays and beyond.
